Job Summary: The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations, ensuring accuracy in financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. This is a hands on accounting job in a nonprofit where the controller is expected to not only oversee but work in the accounting system. The ideal candidate will possess strong accounting abilities, advanced financial acumen, and a strategic mindset to drive the financial health of the organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and analyze financial statements, forecasts, and reports for senior management
- Oversee payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable processes and participate in timeline processing.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations
- Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department including a staff of 2.
- Ensure the timely and accurate preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Develop, implement, and maintain internal financial controls and procedures.
- Monitor and analyze financial performance, providing insights and recommendations to senior program management.
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaising with external auditors.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the executive director, the Treasurer and board of directors.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
- Oversee and implement cash flow management, budgeting, and forecasting activities.
- Assist in the development and implementation of financial strategies to support nonprofit sustainability.
- Lead, mentor, and develop finance team members.
Position Description
- Financial Management and Reporting: Controller oversees the preparation and maintenance of accurate financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. They ensure these reports comply with accounting standards and regulations.
- Budgeting and Forecasting: The Controller creates and manages the company's budget, working with other departments to develop realistic financial plans that align with organizational goals. They also forecast financial performance and identify potential risks or opportunities.
- Cash Flow Management: The Controller monitors and balance cash flows, ensuring the company has sufficient funds to meet its obligations while optimizing investments.
- Risk Management and Internal Controls: They identify, assess, and manage financial risks, implementing adequate policies and procedures to mitigate them1. The Controller also develops and enforces internal controls to safeguard company assets and reduce fraud.
- Compliance and Regulatory Oversight: The Controller ensures adherence to financial regulations, staying up to date with changes in laws and adjusting company policies accordingly.
- Team Management: They lead and supervise the accounting team, providing guidance, feedback, and ensuring the team has the necessary skills and resources to perform effectively.
- Audit Liaison: The Controller coordinates with external auditors, addressing audit findings and implementing necessary reporting changes.
- Strategic Support: They provide financial insights and analysis to support executive decision-making and help move the company toward its mission and goals.
- Process Improvement: The Controller will work on streamlining accounting processes, improving operational efficiency, and suggesting improvements to achieve business goals.
- Payroll Oversight: They perform essential duties related to payroll management and seek to maximize payroll efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; a Master’s degree or CPA designation is preferred.
- Proven experience as a Controller or similar role in a [specific industry] environment.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial regulations.
- Proficient in accounting software and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint).
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
