Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of psychiatric and substance abuse disorders in adult populations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of general and psychiatric nursing care.
  • Effective knowledge of adult and children consumers as related to all intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and physical aspects of their development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of behavior management, crisis intervention, and interventions common to acute psychiatric consumers as well as to non-violent crisis intervention practice.
  • Excellent knowledge of medical emergencies and triage assessments for such.
  • Knowledge of cultural diversity.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Nurse Manager and supervisor of all crisis center nursing staff.  Serve as the RN on triage/temp obs on first shift as scheduled.
  • Monitor clinical care data and collaborate with the Center Director and other Crisis Center managers to ensure that nursing personnel are providing services that meet or exceed Crisis Center policies and procedures and other regulatory standards.
  • Develop and distribute work schedules that maintain established levels of coverage.
  • Facilitate cross-training between programs.
  • Participate in performance evaluations of nursing staff and take corrective measures when warranted.
  • Develop policy and procedure to direct provision of nursing care, and ensure that nursing personnel follow established protocols.
  • Provide all necessary data as required by regulatory bodies.
  • Provide consultation and evaluation services to staff and general public as assigned.
  • Provide clinical services, as assigned.
  • Other relevant duties, as assigned.
  • Train all staff in the management or monitoring of medical issues including vital signs, first aid, common medical symptoms to report, how to respond in an emergency and what constitutes an emergency situation. Train on the use of medical equipment.
  • Monitor dietary guidelines, if any, for identified clientele.
  • Ensure that appropriate and sufficient medical and client care supplies are maintained.
  • Ensure that all assigned duties are implemented according to IRBH and DMH policies and procedures.
  • Ensure that all safety, fire prevention, and health measures are followed.
  • Conduct interviews and make recommendations for hiring of all nursing positions.
  • Maintain communication and awareness of current events by reading memos, e-mails, bulletin boards, and communication logs.
  • Work independently and with teams to complete assigned tasks accurately and in a timely manner with minimum supervision.
  • Support Organizational Code of Conduct, Standards Compliance, HIPAA and Security Programs by ensuring job tasks are performed in a legal and ethical manner, assessing the work area for non-compliance and notifying the supervisor, manager, Crisis Center Director or designee as appropriate, and maintaining training requirements and understanding that training is a required condition of employment.
  • Maintain the confidential nature of all consumer and organization related activities by not divulging information outside the facility, discussing information within the facility on a need-to-know basis, acknowledging policy annually by signing confidentiality statement, and by referring media and general inquiries to the Center Director.
  • Adhere to attendance and punctuality policy by allowing adequate time to arrive, clock-in and assume responsibilities at designated time, adhering to meal and break times and making timely requests for annual leave and reporting the need for sick leave in accordance with policy.
  • Devote 40 hours per week to the completion of duties as outlined in the job description.  More than 40 hours of work per week may be required to meet job responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Comply with all standards related to safety and health by maintaining current TB Test, CPR/First Aid, CPI, and by reporting infections and on-the-job injuries in accordance with policy. 
  • Identify opportunities for improving the quality of services provided by the department and the organization.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Crisis Center Director.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must possess a current RN license in the state of Alabama.
  • 2 years experience in a mental health setting required.
  • 2 years supervisory experience required.
  • Familiarity of psycho-pharmacy and the use of psychotropic medications with the adult population required.
  • Current Alabama driver's license and good driving record as defined by IRBH policy.
  • Must be able to read, write legibly, speak, and comprehend English.

Working Conditions:  Works in general medical clinic environment and/or in residential facilities; may require long hours.  Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to, computer, copier, multi-line phone and fax machine.  Must be able to lift fifty (50) pounds and negotiate several sets of stairs in an eight (8) hour period.  Some risk involved in the event of aggressive/out-of-control consumers.  Must possess a valid Alabama driver's license.
