NEW Solutions connects experienced workers (ages 55+) with the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS). These experienced professionals provide administrative, scientific, and technical support to the Agricultural Research Service through the Experienced Worker Program (EWP). *This position will be open until filled. NOTE: This position has the option to work remotely. Some travel may be required.

Qualifications:

BA/BS Degree in Animal Science, Biology, or similar biology-related area of study.

  • GIS Post-Baccalaureate Certification (non-degree major); Proficient in the rules and regulations of the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program; An understanding of the daily operations of the USDA-APHIS Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program and south Texas geography; Proficient in ArcGIS Pro, Adobe, MS Access, and Microsoft 365.; Experience speaking with and training mapping platform end-users to efficiently utilize developed mapping programs.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, Power Point
  • Adobe, ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft 365, MS Access
Duties:

Maintain AGOL editor apps and dashboards for use by USDA-APHIS and USDA-ARS to track cattle fever tick infestations in real time for use in research and regulatory action. Provide fever tick GIS mapping support for the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program as well as mapping products need for ongoing USDA-ARS research projects. The enrollee shall not sign federal documents, authorize the use of federal funds, nor initiate or conduct federally funded research projects. The enrollee shall not author articles for publication as a federal employee, nor coordinate scientific research between the Government and private industry. The enrollee shall not present themselves as a Government employee or Government representative at meetings both foreign and domestic or when coordinating federal agencies' areas of research. The enrollee shall not make decisions on federally based research on behalf of Government policy makers, and the enrollee shall not supervise any Government employees.

  • Prepare various maps, graphs, and tables for presentations and public meetings for USDA- ARS, USDA-APHIS, and the Texas Animal Health Commission personnel regarding tick exposures, infestations, wildlife hunts, and quarantined premises along the Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program quarantine area and parts of south Texas affected by cattle fever tick outbreaks.    40%
  • Design, create, and maintain AGOL editor apps and dashboards for use by USDA-APHIS-Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program to ensure continuity of data collection.    25%
  • Create training docs and support to assist USDA-APHIS Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program end-users utilizing the AGOL editor apps and dashboards.    20%
  • Compile livestock data from TexCore for heat maps to track fever tick surveillance for USDA-ARS researchers and USDA-APHIS Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program.    15%

Other:
  • Travel Requirements: Travel to Kerrville TX, or south Texas may be required to trouble shoot issues with GIS/mapping platforms or to train APHIS stakeholder end-users utilizing ARS developed mapping tools.
  • Overnight travel: 1 night per month.
  • Air travel anticipated: 3 flights per year.
  • Rental cars: 3 rentals per year.
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
