Claims Examiner I

 

Summary 

The Claims Examiner-I is primarily responsible for processing simpler to moderate, cargo, general liability, and physical damage claims by company and department objectives.  The Claims Examiner-I will also process overage, shortage, and disposition (OS&D) claims on an as-needed basis.  This position will process and document claims to ensure compliance with company standards and industry best practices.? They will negotiate claim settlements and manage subrogation. The Claims Examiner-I conducts the handling of claims in the utmost good faith in compliance with the rules, regulations, and company core values.  They are expected to function with a high degree of competency and the use of good judgment coupled with consistent results. 

 

 Education and Experience 

  • Associate/Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education experience in Claims Processing. 

  • Minimum 3 years of experience handling complex issues.  Previous claims handling experience preferred. 

  • Ability to quickly learn and understand tort and state laws as they relate to assigned claims. 

  • Working knowledge of motor carrier insurance policies and coverages, self-funded insurance plans, cargo contracts motor carrier equipment, and cargo value preferred but will train. 

  • Ability to analyze and interpret legal documents.  

  • Ability to quickly learn or have knowledge of DOT and other federal regulations applicable to the trucking industry. 

  • Self-motivated, able to multi-task and work independently. 

  • Team player, amenable to a variety of work projects. 

  • Must be able to maintain a high level of confidentiality. 

  • Proficient in responding to internal and external customer situations, responding to customer needs as required. 

  • Think creatively and provide creative contributions to projects. 

  • Understands and consistently performs in accordance with ATS's Mission, Vision, and Values. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required. 

  • Excellent communication skills (written, listening, and verbal). 

  • Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Investigate and facilitate accident and cargo claim calls as received.   

  • Research and manage simpler to moderate third-party cargo damage, liability, and physical damage claims. 

  • Maintain contact with claimants, obtain damage estimates, determine the extent of liability and loss, set up appropriate reserves, handle the sale/disposal of salvage, and negotiate fair settlements.   

  • Settles claims up to $15K without manager approval.  

  • Process, adjust, subrogate, and negotiate fair settlements for claims customarily non-litigated and under $100K.  

  • Analyze claims for subrogation potential. Pursue where appropriate. 

  • Work within company guidelines to set initial reserves for physical damage, bodily injury, and cargo claims; process and expense within an initial 72 hours. Discuss and recommend reserve increases or adjustments and provide an action plan to the VP of Risk. 

  • Coordinate investigations with independent adjusters, attorneys, and experts, if necessary.  

  • Work within set company and DOT guidelines to determine when post-accident drug and alcohol testing is needed and notify the Safety department. 

  • Respond to internal and external situations when able. Escalate appropriate situations as needed. 

  • Maintain accurate filing and documentation for each claim.  

  • Partner with internal departments to provide information, which includes consulting on bond issues in and out of the United States and processing large citations.   

  • Participate in a rotating schedule for on-call after-hours coverage.

  • Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required.   

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

This position performs work primarily in an office setting. 

  • Constantly in a stationary position and occasionally will move around.
