Mainframe Database Administrator (DBA)

Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled Mainframe Database Administrator (DBA) to support and manage the database environments for mission-critical applications. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience with DB2 and IMS subsystems, providing physical database support, performance tuning, troubleshooting, and disaster recovery for large-scale mainframe environments.


Key Responsibilities:

Physical Database Support

  • Create and manage physical database objects such as DDL, DBD, ACB, files, tablespaces, and indexes.
  • Perform database maintenance, modifications, and enhancements to ensure efficient operations.
  • Implement and maintain database archival processes and procedures.
  • Execute bind processes for application plans/packages during test and production rollouts.

Database Administration

  • Manage database tablespaces, including creation, resizing, buffer pool assignments, and lock size modifications.
  • Perform updates to DB2 objects, including creating tables, altering columns, renaming objects, and adding indexes.
  • Set up and run utility jobs (e.g., image copies, reorganizations, data loads/unloads) for application objects.
  • Conduct application table refreshes across environments (e.g., Production, TEST/DEV, QA).
  • Monitor database performance, space utilization, and recommend improvements.

Performance Tuning and Optimization

  • Provide expert-level performance tuning for DB systems and related files.
  • Optimize DB2 tables, queries, buffer pools, and system resources for maximum efficiency.
  • Conduct application performance tuning related to DB2 and IMS databases.

Disaster Recovery (DR) and On-Call Support

  • Provide DR support for application objects and maintain technical procedures/documentation.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot database issues, offering on-call support for critical incidents.
  • Establish quiesce points and perform recovery operations as necessary.

System Administration and Security

  • Retain and manage exclusive use of DBMS system administration IDs and privileges.
  • Plan and assist in implementing production database modifications based on business growth and application changes.
  • Promote approved database changes into the production environment.

Subsystem-Specific Responsibilities

IMS Subsystem

  • Create logical and physical designs based on business requirements.
  • Develop and run DBDs, write Calls, SSA, and PSBs as per requests.
  • Performance tune IMS databases and troubleshoot/debug subsystem issues.
  • Create test components and CLIST scripts for debugging and troubleshooting.

DB2 Subsystem

  • Develop logical and physical designs, including creating and running DDL for tables and indexes.
  • Review, optimize, and troubleshoot queries for performance issues.
  • Support internally developed DB2 utilities and tools.
  • Execute Runstat and Package Rebind jobs and maintain system stability.
  • Generate and test components (binds, runstats, utilities) to support application development.

Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience:

    • Extensive hands-on experience in DB2 and IMS mainframe database administration.
    • Proven ability to create and maintain physical/logical database designs and optimize performance.
    • Expertise in troubleshooting/debugging mainframe database systems.
  • Technical Skills:

    • Strong understanding of DB2 and IMS subsystems on mainframes.
    • Proficiency in DDL, DBD, ACB, table-space management, and utilities setup.
    • Experience with performance tuning, Runstats, binds, and query optimization.
    • Familiarity with mainframe tools and utilities (e.g., SMP/E, CLIST).
