IBM Mainframe z/OS Systems Programmer

Position Summary:
The IBM Mainframe z/OS Systems Programmer is responsible for ensuring the smooth operation, maintenance, and support of IBM z/OS systems and related software. This role requires deep expertise in mainframe environments, SMP/E, and legacy systems, as well as strong communication and coordination skills to support upgrades, testing, and incident response. IBM Mainframe Systems Programmer Level III Certificate 2.5 is required.


Key Responsibilities:

  1. System Installation and Maintenance:

    • Install, configure, and maintain IBM z/OS operating systems and related system software.
    • Apply cumulative Program Temporary Fix (PTF) packages and updates for supported server standard products and utilities.
  2. SMP/E Management:

    • Perform SMP/E (System Modification Program/Extended) tasks to support required products, ensuring system reliability and performance.
  3. Legacy Windows Server Support:

    • Provide support for legacy Windows Server environments as needed.
  4. Documentation Maintenance:

    • Update and maintain in-house documentation systems, such as BUGS/PTD/PTO (CLIST/ISPF), ensuring accurate records and process transparency.
  5. Test and Implementation Planning:

    • Collaborate with the LADWP team to establish and execute test and implementation plans for operating system version upgrades.
  6. Testing and Implementation Coordination:

    • Schedule and oversee operating system testing and implementation to ensure seamless transitions with minimal disruption.
  7. Change Management Communication:

    • Communicate installation prerequisites (e.g., additional disk space or memory) and post-installation procedures via the change management process.
  8. SCRT Reporting:

    • Submit IBM SCRT (Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool) reports monthly, ensuring compliance with IBM requirements.
  9. Software Recommendations and Licensing:

    • Recommend software orders for IBM and Independent Software Vendor (ISV) products to ITS staff.
    • Implement and manage product key codes for ISV software.
  10. Disaster Recovery Support:

  • Provide disaster recovery (DR) support for z/OS software, maintaining comprehensive technical procedures and documentation.
  1. On-Call Support:
  • Serve as an on-call resource to diagnose and resolve z/OS systems issues during off-hours as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education:

    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field. Equivalent work experience may be considered.
  • Experience:

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in z/OS systems programming, including SMP/E management, software installation, and systems maintenance.
    • Experience with IBM SCRT reporting and disaster recovery planning.
    • Familiarity with legacy Windows Server environments and CLIST/ISPF documentation systems.
  • Skills and Knowledge:

    • Expertise in IBM mainframe technologies, including z/OS and ISV software.
    • Strong understanding of SMP/E and mainframe utilities.
    • Excellent troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Effective communication skills for coordinating with technical and non-technical staff.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certifications such as IBM Certified System Programmer or related credentials.
  • Experience in large-scale mainframe environments, particularly with utilities or public-sector organizations.
