Controller

About us

Part of a 60 year old US company, we are an almost 50 year-old Canadian business that has some sales activity in the USA and Mexico. Ownership and some supporting activities sit in the USA with the Controller servicing all regions.

Who we're looking for

As a senior member of the management team the Controller must be curious, energetic and care.

The Controller ensures that the Company's assets are safeguarded, risks are mitigated, financial results are reported in an accurate and timely manner, produces strategic forecasts and budgets, ensures that we maintain cost effective insurance policies and competitive employee benefits.

What you'll be doing (the short list)

  • Supervising the processing of all accounting transactions including those associated with accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll including all journal entries.
  • Developing and maintaining a system of documented accounting policies, processes and procedures that ensure effective control and timely processing of all transactions and that risk is minimized.
  • Reconciling all accounts in a timely manner including, but not limited to cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable and fixed assets.
  • Managing and reporting on all cash balances daily.
  • Producing daily, weekly, monthly and annual financial reporting required to support the operation of the business. Ensuring that such reporting complies with generally accepted accounting principles, where applicable.
  • Providing management with required ad hoc financial analysis with emphasis on pricing decisions, contract negotiations and capital investments.
  • Producing forecasts and budgets as required by management. Explaining significant variances.
  • Working with external accountants to ensure that annual financial reporting reviews are completed in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Working with external accountants to ensure that we comply with income tax regulations; including the timely filling of income tax reports.
  • Actively identifying areas of improvement, defining solutions and getting them implemented.
  • Ensuring compliance with a variety reporting and licensing requirements.
  • Employing brokers and consultants, as required, to ensure that we maintain adequate and cost-effective insurance policies along with competitive and cost effective employee benefits.
  • Managing the annual employee review process.
  • Referring employee matters to management and ensuring compliance with all related employment policies.
  • Assisting management in sourcing and interviewing candidates.
  • Performing other related duties as necessary or assigned.

What HR is trying to say is we need a numbers person that is going to manage the books by the book, share information effectively, work through the Accounting-speak so the non-Accounting types get it and set things up the right way so it's quick, consistent and efficient. Oh yeah, and as they alluded with the "Perform other related duties" part, we're always evolving so your role will evolve too – that's why they put "short list" in that header.

What you bring

  • Bachelor's degree with an emphasis on Accounting.
  • Ten years of related experience preferred.
  • Excellent management and supervisory skills.
  • Strong presentation skills, written and verbal.
  • Organization and efficient time management.
  • ERP experience – Sage and Amtech preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365, or similar products.

OK, now they're saying you have to know your stuff. This is a Senior role and a lot of people are counting on you. So, you have to like that and embrace that, otherwise you're not gonna like it and it will show. But, if you're that person, then you will love working within the company, the staff and the management team. And, you have to be with the times so the whole ERP and Microsoft thing is critical to making sure we stay with the times and things are efficient.

What we offer

  • Near 50-year presence in Canada. (yeah, there's stability)
  • Compensation commensurate with experience. (you'll earn it, but you're gonna get paid well)
  • A structured and supportive environment. (we're not putting you on an island)
  • Paid vacation, holidays and sick days. (we realize people have lives)
  • RRSP and Extended Health Benefits. (we have families and want to stay healthy too)
  • The latitude to implement the processes and policies needed to help us manage the business effectively (it's ours, but you can make it yours).
  • An awesome Senior Management team, if we may say so ourselves. In all seriousness, management is focused, aligned and highly supportive of each other – we don't have silos and in-fighting. We all want the same thing and work well together to get there.
