The Agricultural Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program offers unique opportunities in Scientific, Technical, and Agricultural support for individuals aged 55 and over to support the Department of Agriculture?s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through a grant administered program awarded to National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions). The ACES program provides an opportunity to work side-by-side with NRCS staff that are doing important work every day. Qualifications:

Minimum of 15 year(s) of experience in cultural resources work. OR BA/BS Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field.

  • Knowledge of cultural resources processes, including cultural resources survey, cultural resource and survey documentation, report writing, and ArcGIS is required. Colorado and/or southwestern United States archaeology experience is preferred. Registered Professional Archaeologist accreditation and/or ability to meet the Secretary of the Interior?s Archaeologist requirements and/or ability to be a Principal Investigator on a State of Colorado Archaeology permit are preferred.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel

Duties:

This position primarily works in southwest Colorado but may involve limited travel elsewhere in the state. The ACES Archaeologist provides professional support to the State Cultural Resources Specialist, utilizing a basic understanding of anthropological and archaeological field techniques in connection with locating, testing and evaluating cultural resource sites. The Archaeologist conducts pre-field office research, field surveys, and site evaluations by utilizing a variety of reference materials, interviews with property owners, aerial photographs, historic maps and newspapers, Government Land Office Records, and technical instruments. The Archaeologist will search proposed project areas of potential effect for cultural resources. When identified, they will record cultural resource information in the field with ArcGIS Fieldmaps software, digital cameras, and handwritten notes as needed. The Archeologist will follow Colorado State Historic Preservation Office site form guidance to complete cultural resource forms and GIS Shapefiles for all identified cultural resources. In addition, they will document all project surveys with the NRCS Colorado Report Form and accompanying GIS shapefiles. The Archaeologist will complete survey assignments in a safe and timely manner according to established standards and procedures. Lastly, they will review work in progress and any issues that have arisen by reporting to team managers in bi-weekly team meetings and one-on-one as needed. Approximately 40% Field work. Pay range is $28-$30/hr.

Other:
  • Selected candidate required under NRCS policy to complete Cultural Resources Training Modules 1-8 and subsequent refresher training every five years.
  • Training in NRCS-centric business tools will be provided as needed. In addition, training in NRCS cultural resource workflows will be provided.
  • Travel Requirements: Up to two trips (6) days of travel per month, depending on project locations.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Federal vehicle driving training.
