? This position supports the National Capital Regional Office of the National Park Service and may be performed remotely. ? The NPS Experienced Services Program is a unique partnership created to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The program connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the NPS to provide scientific, technical, and administrative support. ? NPS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for an estimate of 64 weeks. ? A background security investigation may be required prior to the start date. Only those positions with 30+ hours per week are eligible for health insurance benefits; all positions will accrue sick leave. ? The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as ?Enrollees? and are not employees of the NPS or NEW Solutions. NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the program, and the Enrollees work under NPS direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out their mission. NPS ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current; to access new training opportunities; to engage in gainful project-based positions; and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy, and their own financial security.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 15 year(s) of experience in Preparation of National Register and/or National Historic Landmark nominations and documentation of historic sites, structures, districts, or buildings using photography, mapping, and place-based historical research methods. OR MA/MS Degree in History, Historic Preservation, Archeology, Anthropology, Architectural History, Public History, or related field

  • Extensive knowledge of the National Historic Preservation Act and registration criteria and processes for listing National Register of Historic Places properties and/or National Historic Landmarks.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, Power Point
Duties:

Assist the National Capital Region?s National Historic Landmarks (NHL) Program in updating NHL documentation for Revolutionary-War-era designated properties. This will advance the NHL Program's 250th Commemoration goals by updating, correcting, and diversifying the histories that are enshrined in our nation's National Historic Landmarks.

  • Plan and conduct historical research for planning documents, including research designs, National Historic Landmark nominations, and interpretive tools.   20%
  • Contribute significantly to the preparation of historic property documentation, specifically to updated National Historic Landmark nominations.   20%
  • Recommend, plan for, and execute historical investigations required to meet National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), National Park Service (NPS) guidelines, and the research needs of the program.    20%
  • Consult with cultural resources professionals, historians, and community representatives to keep informed of new developments, research, etc. Evaluate pertinent professional literature and provide recommendations to management.    20%
  • Write research studies, reports, and evaluations in manuscript format at a level acceptable for professional publications. Writing skills should express thoughts and present data clearly and develop ideas in logical sequence applying professional techniques and methods of the history discipline.    20%

  • Travel Requirements: The historian will need to travel to the NHL sites to conduct research and complete field documentation (photography, notes, mapping). In addition, they will be required to complete archival research at a variety of repositories expected to be located in Washington, DC, Virginia, and other Mid-Atlantic archives.
  • Overnight travel: Depending on the historian?s location, fieldwork or research may require 1 to 2 nights of travel no more than 4 times during each phase of the project.
  • Rental cars: Depends on the enrollee?s location.
  • Physical requirements: Work is primarily sedentary and performed at a computer. May be required to travel to repositories of information and visit remote sites which require walking or riding over rough, uneven surfaces.
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
