The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Experienced Services Program (ESP) was established to create a unique partnership to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The USGS ESP connects experienced workers (age 55+) to provide scientific, technical, and administrative services in support of the USGS mission. The experienced workers participating in the ESP are referred to as ?enrollees? and are not employees of USGS or National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions). NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the ESP, and the enrollees work under USGS direction based on the functions in this job description. USGS ESP enrollees benefit from the opportunity to mentor and to engage in gainful project-based work, and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy and their own financial security. A background security investigation may be required prior to start date. Location, hours and hourly pay are noted in this position description. USGS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary support with this position being funded for approximately 832 hours at 8 hours per week. Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in scientific monitoring and sampling procedures and aquatic macroinvertebrate identification skills OR BA/BS Degree in Biology or related field OR Previously completed training in records management

  • Strong knowledge of Upper Mississippi River management and history
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS SharePoint, MS Teams, MS Outlook, Adobe
Duties:

This position will support efficiently implementing and expanding a multi-state river monitoring program. The position will manage records, archives, and databases; assist sample management, processing, and methods development; and provide technical writing support to branch staff.

  • Mississippi River Historical Records Management * Review data sheets, reports, memos, and other paper holdings circa 1986 to 2010 that were either produced or otherwise obtained by the Long Term Resource Monitoring (LTRM) element of the Upper Mississippi River Restoration (UMRR) program and sort and into established categories. * Identify alternatives and requirements for disposition of holdings in each category * Scan and organize select archive reports and publications for easy retrieval * Organize and catalog multimedia holdings * Develop a program-wide staff listing for the LTRM period of record    40%
  • Monitoring and Science Support * Update and manage a habitat rehabilitation project objectives database * Assist partners in development of turtle mark and recapture objectives and methods * Assist processing of select macroinvertebrate samples * Pull phytoplankton sample bottles for shipment to processing contractor   40%
  • Writing Support * Develop standardized descriptions for six key monitoring reaches * Update text for LTRM web pages   20%

Other:
  • Annual information system security, anti-harassment, and civil rights training. Enrollee will be required to complete security awareness training in order to have access to government computer systems. They will also be required to complete other workplace training which will be provided by the government at no cost to the enrollee or NEW Solutions. Minor training associated with USGS specific programs and systems will be provided by the government.
  • Government Vehicle Training: May not be needed, however in the event GOV is required, Enrollee will need to complete Defensive Driver training as provided by USGS.
  • Physical requirements: Most work will require light activity and frequent sitting, standing, and walking. Ability to lift and maneuver Bankers Boxes full of paper is required. Ability to use office equipment for reading, transmitting, and scanning, e.g., copiers/scanners, computers
