Qualifications:

Minimum of 2 year(s) of experience in Minimum of 2 years of experience in historic preservation OR AA/HS Degree OR Previously completed training in historic preservation

  • Working knowledge of historic trades and the tools used in replicating building features. Woodworking and carpentry skills.
  • Contemporary carpentry and maintenance tools, mathematics used in carpentry, working knowledge of historic trades
Duties:

Investigate, evaluate, and perform necessary repairs relative to the preservation, rehabilitation, and maintenance efforts needed for specific historic structures. Performs state of the art preservation carpentry and maintenance tasks, including interior and exterior work on historic structures.

  • Perform state of the art preservation techniques on historic structures, utilizing ancient craft skills from early 19th through early 20th century. Use their knowledge of current technologies in historic preservation.   50%
  • Work in a team repairing, rehabilitating, stabilizing, restoring, and maintaining frameworks, rafters, doors, windows, floors, staircases, trusses and beams, interior and exterior trim, and roofing.   30%
  • Possess or can obtain knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior?s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.   20%

Other:
  • Overnight travel: Rarely, due to pandemic.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Work may involve some hazardous conditions due to presence of asbestos, PCBs, etc. in historic structures and proximity to heavy construction equipment. The use of some preservative materials may require special knowledge and handling and the use of protective equipment.
  • Required Safety Gear: Standard safety equipment in the maintenance and carpentry fields such as safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hats, gloves, safety-toed footwear, fall protection, respirators, harness for roof work.
  • Physical requirements: Ability to use common and specialized tools of the trade, travel by foot over rough terrain, work outside in varying temperature conditions and elevations, work on ladders and scaffolds up to 20 feet high. Ability to work in dirty conditions, ability to operate heavy equipment such as forklifts in performance of duties.
