The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Experienced Services Program (ESP) was established to create a unique partnership to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The USGS ESP connects experienced workers (age 55+) to provide scientific, technical, and administrative services in support of the USGS mission. The experienced workers participating in the ESP are referred to as ?enrollees? and are not employees of USGS or National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions). NEW Solutions is the ESP non-governmental organization responsible for administrative aspects of the ESP, and the enrollees work under USGS direction based on the functions in this job description. USGS ESP enrollees benefit from the opportunity to mentor and to engage in gainful project-based work, and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy and their own financial security. A background security investigation may be required prior to start date. Location, hours and hourly pay are noted in this position description. USGS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary support with this position being funded for approximately 216 hours at 8 hours per week. (this is subject to change based on budget and other factors). This position is available for remote.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 10 year(s) of experience in GIS, spatial analysis, remote sensing image processing, geodatabase creation OR MA/MS Degree

  • Spatial analysis of terrestrial and freshwater natural resources; remote sensing data and image processing; linear referencing; lidar data processing and analysis; spatial metadata creation and documentation.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, ARCVIEW (GIS), MS Teams
  • DOI/USGS Software (Esri ArcGIS Pro)
Duties:

Provide GIS/ARD support to USGS FRESC research projects by developing and applying spatial tools and methods for analyzing and managing digital geographic data. The USGS FRESC conducts research and monitoring studies on issues related to the management of natural resources in forest and rangeland ecosystems. Specific objectives of this research are to acquire knowledge, develop applications for management, and monitor changes in the following areas: ecosystem ecology, landscape ecology, ecological restoration and management, conservation biology, and inventory and monitoring methods and techniques.

  • Perform GIS and spatial data processing and analysis to support research on landscape patterns and processes related to watershed condition, hydrologic features, aquatic species distribution, and stream habitat characteristics.   60%
  • Develop metadata to document data quality assurance and quality control, generate XML code with database definitions, and outline workflow procedures.   20%
  • Document analysis and data processing methods and prepare data releases for online publication and peer-reviewed publications.   20%

  • Physical requirements: All work will be conducted in an office with a laptop computer, external mouse, two external monitors, and external hard drives.
