The Fish and Wildlife Service Experienced Services Program was established to create a unique partnership to help solve the workforce issues facing government agencies. The Fish and Wildlife ESP connects experienced workers (age 55+) to the Fish and Wildlife Service to provide scientific, technical, and administrative services in support of the Fish and Wildlife Service priority multiple-use related programs and authorities. The experienced workers participating in the Program are referred to as Enrollee and are not employees of FWS or National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions). NEW Solutions is the ESP Non-governmental organization (NGO) responsible for administrative aspects of the Program, and the Enrollees work under Fish and Wildlife Service direction to assist the Agency staff in carrying out the Fish and Wildlife Service mission. Fish and Wildlife Service ESP Enrollees benefit from the opportunity to keep technical skills current, to access new training opportunities, to engage in gainful project-based positions, and to undertake meaningful tasks using their experience and talent to contribute to the environment, the national economy and their own financial security. Background security investigation may be required prior to start date. Location, hours and hourly pay are noted in this position description. FWS ESP positions are meant to provide temporary, project-based support. This position is currently funded for approximately 336 hours at 16 hours per week. (this is subject to change based on budget and other factors). Local Applicants Only. Must live within commutable distance to Parker River National Wildlife Refuge. Must be able to work every Tuesday, otherwise flexible schedule available.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 3 year(s) of experience in administrative support, office management, reception, customer service, communications, outreach and engagement, or related public service OR AA Degree in Administration, Communications, Office Management

  • Highly organized, ability to multitask, experience with multi-line phone, basic computer skills (e.g. e-mail including ability to share links and attachments; Microsoft Word suite; web browser), experience using printer / scanner / copying machine, strong oral and written communication skills. This individual will represent the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Parker River National Wildlife Refuge to members of the public and should have experience providing friendly, professional, and helpful customer service to people of all backgrounds, identities, and cultures.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
Duties:

This position supports administrative duties for refuge staff, volunteers, interns, and members of the public visiting Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

  • Answering phones & e-mails from the public / refuge visitors   30%
  • Answering questions from the public in person, including supporting visitor center welcome desk volunteers and covering the welcome desk when volunteers are not available   20%
  • Exchanging visitors? receipts from the self-service pass machine for physical passes and/or issuing free passes to eligible visitors (e.g. veteran's, active service members, gold star family members)   20%
  • Helping with light office management tasks including incoming and outgoing mail, organizing supplies and notifying supervisor when supply orders need to be places, making copies of outreach materials, records management, and other light duties as required   15%
  • Supporting visitor center operations, including locking and unlocking the exhibit area doors for volunteers, helping with light program set up and tear down, raising and lowering the flag as needed, and other light duties as required   15%

Other:
  • Government Vehicle Training: Federal defensive driver training will be provided by USFWS at no cost to the employee, and will be completed during paid working hours.
  • Physical requirements: Physical requirements are similar to those associated with any light office work, which includes the ability to lift up to 20lbs, fine motor skills required for computer and/or telephone use, sitting for extended periods of time, and occasionally moving between locations throughout the visitor center and grounds including some unpaved terrain. Applicants who are uncertain about their ability to complete the physical requirements are encouraged to apply as many tasks can be adapted.
