Heavy Equipment Operator

Summary:

The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. Equipment may include and is not limited to trucks, front-end loaders, dozers, graders, compactors, excavators, skid steers, skidders, tractors and other pieces of equipment. The position requires the successful candidate to: clean, maintain and secure all equipment as directed, follow policies and procedures, deal with customers and members of the public from time to time, conduct yourself in a courteous and respectful manner, be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done safely and efficiently, which may require some general labor work outside of equipment operations.

Key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Operate heavy, motorized equipment used in earth moving and construction operations in a safe and effective manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life
  • Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
  • Work outdoors on location in all weather conditions and on all terrain, usually from the early morning hours until late afternoon/early evening
  • May be expected to work evenings, weekends or swing shifts
  • Inspect the vehicles to ensure safety
  • Repair or assist in the repair and maintenance of the construction vehicles
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment as required including fluid and filter changes and parts lubrication
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks
  • Clean equipment as scheduled and/or required
  • Ensure equipment is safely and securely stored
  • Practice workplace safety per OSHA standards
  • Be able to handle physically strenuous and demanding conditions.
  • Prepared to work in all types of weather conditions including extreme heat/cold
  • Ability to work independently and to stay on top of the schedule.
  • Willingness to do work outside of equipment operations, which includes but is not limited to general labor work
  • Willingness to travel out of town if required
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Lift items of 50 pounds or more overhead
  • Read and write to keep up with daily records
  • Deal with the public in a positive, courteous and respectful manner
  • Team-oriented
  • Flexible with schedule
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities, as assigned or required
