The Agricultural Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program offers unique opportunities in Scientific, Technical, and Agricultural support for individuals age 55 and over to support the Department of Agriculture?s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through a grant administered program awarded to National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions). This is a unique program where your talents, expertise and experience will truly be valued. The ACES program provides an opportunity to work side-by-side with NRCS staff that are doing important work every day. NOTE: Positions listed here do not guarantee employment for any definite period. Enrollment in the Experienced Worker Programs administered by NEW Solutions is temporary. The enrollment relationship between NEW Solutions and the Enrollee is an "at-will" relationship. This means that an Enrollee is free to terminate enrollment at any time during the enrollment period, and NEW Solutions and the Agency have the right to terminate the relationship with the Enrollee. NOTE: An ?ACES Enrollee? is not a federal employee, nor an employee of NEW Solutions. An ?ACES Enrollee? is a participant in a grant program, which is established through a Cooperative Agreement funded by the USDA-NRCS and administered by NEW Solutions.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in forestry management and/or applied soil science. OR BA/BS Degree in Forestry, soil science, or related field.

Duties:

This position will serve as a national - level technical specialist in the area of forestland soils, specifically soil health management in non-industrial private forest lands. The position will also collaborate with other specialists to provide technical guidance, recommendations, and assistance in agroforestry applications. The position will coordinate across technical disciplines to develop training, in-field assessment, and acquire technology in the fields of forestry, agroforestry, and soil health management.

  • Develop technical notes and chapter(s) of a handbook in the areas of soil health management on forestlands and/or in agroforestry and silvopasture applications.   33%
  • Develop training for NRCS employees and partners in the areas of soil health management on forest lands and in agroforestry and/or silvopasture applications.   33%
  • Provide direct technical assistance to NRCS employees assisting non-industrial private forest land customers with soil health needs in the States.   12%
  • Lead refinement of in-field forestland soil health assessment tool and other tools.   11%
  • Work with Soil Health Division Indigenous Practices Team to provide assistance related to incorporation of traditional ecological knowledge on forestlands to NRCS technology.   11%

  • Annual information system security, anti-harassment, and civil rights training.
  • Travel Requirements: Occasional travel for in-person team meetings, for cross - discipline collaboration, and to provide technical assistance for NRCS employees or partners
  • Overnight travel: 4 to 6 times per year
  • Air travel anticipated: 4 to 6 times per year
  • Rental cars: potentially needed if providing technical assistance
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
