Yard Worker/Forklift Operator
Summary
The San Luis yard worker is responsible to transfer, secure, and staging freight by operating the appropriate company equipment or vehicle so that loads will arrive at the final destination in a safe, timely, and efficient manner.
Education and Experience
- High School Diploma or Equivalent.
- Experience with operating vehicles and heavy equipment in a transportation environment preferred.
- A valid driver’s license is required.
- Must possess a valid TWIC Card or be approved for one within 90 days of employment
- Forklift certified or become certified within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to operate all yard-related equipment.
- Must be self-motivated, able to multi-task, and work independently.
- Must be a team player, amenable to a variety of work projects.
- Good decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail, and customer service skills (internal/external).
- Basic experience in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) is required.
- Excellent communication skills (written, listening, and verbal).
- Willing and able to travel occasionally, including overnight travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs or assists in terminal maintenance by using motorized equipment and hand/power tools for the upkeep of the property.
- Organizes, cleans, and secures storage yards and work areas to be free of hazards.
- Report any broken or missing equipment to the supervisor.
- Operates all terminal equipment and vehicles safely to limit risk and liability to the employee, visitors, and company.
- Assists with the preparation of all loads for shipping by following all DOT, OSHA, and company safety guidelines to protect the load, public, equipment, and property always.
- Looks up shipping instructions in the computer system.
- Assists with loading/unloading and securement of loads as needed.
- Conducts required safety inspection checks daily.
- Assists during the trailer stacking, unstacking, and securing.

- Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

- Frequently operate various forklifts and move products i.e., tractors.
- Occasionally uses hand tools and power hand tools to perform light maintenance or cleaning.
- Frequently inspects and assesses equipment and loads to ensure safe transportation.
- Frequently climbs up/down forklifts, tractors, and ladders to perform duties.
- Frequently position yourself under, on top of, or in awkward positions to secure loads or fix things.
- Must be able to lift/move parts, tools, and equipment:
- From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently
- From 11 to 25 lbs. Frequently
- From 25 to 50 lbs Occasionally
- Over 50 lbs. Occasionally
- Exposure to:
- Loud noises constantly require hearing protection.
- Temperature extremes frequently due to outside weather conditions.
- Dirt, dust, grease, and odors constantly.
- Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots.
Compensation & Benefits:
- The anticipated hourly pay range for this position is between $20.00 - $25.00. Hourly pay rate offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic location as compared to others doing substantially similar work . In addition to the hourly rate of pay, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
