Prep & Body Shop Manager
Summary
ATS Prep/Body Shop Manager is directly responsible for the tractor prep process of new assets, in-service unmanned, and for-sale units. They will be the primary point of contact between Operations and the Maintenance teams with system-wide oversight to best manage and coordinate unmanned units selected for new drivers or non-orientation reasons. Prep Manager will be accountable for prep staffing, prep process and outside vendor management to help deliver high Driver and Customer experiences.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from a four-year college or university; or 5-7 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience in the industry.
- Two to five years of supervisory experience required.
- Firm understanding of the transportation industry with a strong working knowledge of diesel maintenance and repair principles.
- Thorough understanding of OSHA and Hazmat regulations, and general shop safety.
- Strong planning and problem-solving skills; able to identify and resolve problems promptly.
- Thorough understanding of unmanned maintenance and repair processes.
- Thorough understanding and knowledge of FMCSA Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance regulations.
- Experience with the tools of the trade to maintain and service equipment such as maintenance procedures, technical support, and reliability improvement.
- Ability to perform effectively under limited guidance/assistance from functional leadership.
- Strong interpersonal skills; able to establish trust and rapport with all levels of internal and external staff, along with outside vendors. Able to relate effectively to diverse cultures.
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage and prioritize workload in a fast-paced environment.
- Able to gather and analyze large volumes of data and information to assist functional leadership in developing standard operating procedures and workflow instructions.
- Must demonstrate a proactive commitment to ATS corporate values and the success of all staff.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
- Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
- Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Monitor daily ATS tractor assets that are unmanned or marked for-sale at all ATS shop locations.
- Manage a Service leader with a team of Technicians to meet weekly class and non-orientation goals. Following ATS prep process SOP
- Maintain inventory levels of completed units both new and used. Complete units based on types needed after collaborating with Operations.
- Work with Claims Department on any needs from Body Shop for unmanned or for sale units.
- Serve as the direct point of contact for Operations and Maintenance teams to effectively manage, coordinate, and provide support for unmanned units assigned for Class or non-orientation needs.
- Collaborate with Maintenance teams to ensure all ATS tractors comply with FMCSA Inspection, Repair, and Maintenance regulations.
- Provide direct oversight of the new asset tractor prep Cost Per Unit (CPU) and active asset operating Cost Per Mile (CPM) related to unmanned prep tractors .
- Participate in continuous improvement activities by reviewing, changing, and improving processes in line with changing customer expectations and organizational goals.
- Resolve customer concerns related to maintenance; develop strong relationships with key stakeholders through frequent and professional communication.
- Ensure the volume of work produced meets company standards and ensures customer satisfaction.
- Identify trends and initiate changes and/or improvements necessary to achieve goals and objectives while ensuring customer needs are met without interruption to service levels.
- Ensure effective problem management processes are followed to identify root causes and prevent reoccurring problems.

- Complete work responsibilities outside of normal business hours as needed and infrequent travel may be required.

Constantly uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position, or enter data into the computer. Constantly inspecting and assessing equipment to determine whether to replace or repair and the best approach to replace/repair. Intermittently communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures, and timelines.
Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:
- From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently
- From 11 to 25 lbs. frequently
- From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
- Over 50 lbs. occasionally
Exposure to:
- Loud noises constantly require hearing protection.
- Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
- Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals, and odors constantly.
- Situations requiring eye protection and steel-toed boots.
Compensation & Benefits
- The anticipated base salary range for this position is $85,000 to $110,000. Base salary offered is determined by relevant experience, education, certifications, and geographic as compared to others doing substantially similar work. In addition to the base salary, employees may be eligible for performance-based incentives, which can vary depending on individual and/or company performance.
