ETL Developer Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented ETL Developer to join our team. This role is essential in managing and optimizing the data infrastructure that supports critical business and geographic information system (GIS) initiatives. The successful candidate will design, implement, and maintain ETL processes, APIs, and data pipelines, ensuring seamless integration and transformation of data for analysis, reporting, and application needs.


Key Responsibilities

Data Management and Transformation

  • Extract, transform, and load (ETL) geographic and non-geographic data from Oracle and SQL Server databases.
  • Ensure data integrity, quality, and consistency during processing.
  • Design and implement efficient data pipelines for handling large datasets.
  • Automate ETL processes using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and related tools.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • Perform data analysis to support organizational objectives and decision-making.
  • Create reporting solutions using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) tailored to user needs.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data-related issues promptly.

API and Integration Development

  • Develop secure, efficient APIs for data access and integration with various applications.
  • Collaborate with developers and analysts to design API endpoints that align with business requirements.
  • Ensure adherence to industry standards for API performance and security.

Database and Performance Optimization

  • Perform data modeling and database design for application development.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, ensuring high availability and redundancy.
  • Follow best practices in database design and data modeling, maintaining consistency in standards and processes.

Collaboration and Support

  • Work closely with GIS analysts, developers, and stakeholders to understand and fulfill data requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to team members.
  • Document ETL processes, workflows, and API specifications to ensure knowledge sharing.
  • Facilitate the creation, migration, and maintenance of database objects across environments.

Required Qualifications and Skills

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, GIS, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience as an ETL Developer, Data Engineer, or similar role.

Technical Proficiency

  • Strong expertise in T-SQL and PL/SQL with experience in Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and PostgreSQL databases.
  • Familiarity with SSIS, SSRS, SSAS, and data warehousing concepts, including ETL, dimensions, facts, and cubes.
  • Proficient in Python, C#, or similar programming languages for ETL and API development.
  • Knowledge of geographic data formats (e.g., shapefiles, GeoJSON) and GIS tools (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS).
  • Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and ETL tools like Talend, Apache Nifi, or Informatica.
  • Skilled in designing and integrating databases, data warehouses, and multidimensional databases.

Additional Skills

  • Familiarity with API frameworks such as Flask, FastAPI, or Django REST Framework.
  • Hands-on experience with version control and release management tools like Azure DevOps and GitHub.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to optimize complex SQL queries, stored procedures, and triggers.
  • Knowledge of data integration patterns and modeling principles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certifications in ETL tools (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle).
  • Experience with code migration, database change management, and lifecycle management.
