Bus Technician I - Garage Nights

JOB SUMMARY: This position will diagnose and perform all major repairs to mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical systems on our fleet equipment.
COMPENSATION: Starting rate is $27.29 per hour. You will reach top rate within 3 years (current top rate for 2024 is $39.00)
This is a Union environment in association with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 282.
AVAILABLE SHIFT: Sunday-Thursday, 11:00pm-7:30am (Friday and Saturday off).
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Maintain, repair, and overhaul buses in the RTS fleet.
- Inspect and test equipment at prescribed intervals of time and usage or upon malfunction or breakdown.
- Disassemble, inspect, and replace worn or broken parts. Fit and adjust new or repaired parts.
- Test drive repaired equipment.
- Notify supervisor of potentially dangerous equipment and corrective action to be taken.
- Must be able to operate electronic diagnostic equipment i.e., computers, Cummins InSite, Allison, etc.
- Must be able to do acetylene and electric welding, brazing, and operate a cutting torch.
- Drive facility tow truck to retrieve disabled vehicles away from facility.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals and vibration. The employee works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to risks. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum of two (2) years of attendance at an accredited diesel mechanics school, in addition, may also have completed a certified course of study of the same but not limited to: Auto Repair, Hydraulics, Diesel Engine Repairs, Battery Electric Vehicle Repairs, Electrical Systems Repair, Welding.
OR
Work experience, verifiable by employment records, may be substituted two years for one for educational requirement.
Other Requirements:
- Must have complete set of tools to perform all jobs assigned.
- Must obtain a New York State CDL Class B permit with passenger and air brake endorsement prior to start date. Must be able to obtain and maintain a New York State CDL Class B license with passenger and air brake endorsement within 90 days of date of hire.
- Must possess a New York State CDL Class A permit with towing endorsement for vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating over 26,000 lbs. (can obtain at a later date). Must be able to obtain and maintain a New York State CDL Class A license with towing endorsement for vehicles with a Gross Combination Weight Rating over 26,000 lbs. within 90 days of date of hire.
- English proficiency is required due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position. To ensure the safety of employees, customers and the general public, an employee holding this position must be able to read, speak and understand the English language. This proficiency is an essential requirement of this job due to the need to effectively communicate and collaborate with English speaking co-workers and supervisors regarding work and safety related matters and tasks. In addition, an employee in this role must be able to read and comprehend materials written in English such as, but not limited to, specifications, manuals and other job-related documents.
