JOB OVERVIEW: Bus Attendants provide essential support to individuals with disabilities during transportation. They ensure a safe, comfortable, and respectful environment, promoting independence and dignity for all passengers.

 

COMPENSATION: $16.00 per hour

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  Monday – Friday, no holidays. Approximately 20-25 hours per week.

Attendants will work a split shift: the hours are between 6:30am-9:30am and then 12:30pm-3:30pm

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provide constant supervision and support to individuals with disabilities during transport.
  • Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking the bus, ensuring safety at all times.
  • Securely fasten wheelchairs, seat belts, and other restraints to prevent injuries.
  • Monitor passengers for any medical or behavioral issues and report concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Administer first aid or CPR if necessary and trained to do so.
  • Implement and follow emergency procedures in case of an accident or incident.
  • Communicate effectively with passengers, ensuring their needs and concerns are addressed.
  • Collaborate with bus drivers and other staff to ensure a coordinated approach to passenger care.
  • Participate in training sessions related to disability support, safety procedures, and emergency response.
  • Adhere to all OPWDD policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Maintains a considerate, cooperative attitude while ensuring the safe transport of the individuals to and from their destinations.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred, but not required.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with calmness and professionalism.

 

*ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • Must complete initial training and certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Must maintain training and certification in CPR and First Aid.
  • Must complete three hours of pre-service instruction in bus safety practices, child management techniques, special needs transportation – including proper techniques for assisting disabled individuals in entering and exiting the bus.
  • Receive a two-hour refresher instruction annually.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds to assist individuals with disabilities.
  • Frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling to secure restraints and assist passengers.
  • Ability to climb stairs, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods during shifts.
  • Manual dexterity to operate wheelchair lifts and other transportation equipment.
  • Adequate visual and auditory abilities to monitor passenger safety and respond to emergencies.
  • Ability to work in extreme heat/cold for short periods of time.
