RTS Access Bus Operator (Paratransit)
ABOUT RTS ACCESS: RTS Access provides complementary service, also known as "paratransit service," to the RTS fixed route system. This form of transportation is available to those customers with disabilities who are unable to utilize the RTS fixed route system for all or some of their transportation needs. RTS Access is currently seeking qualified individuals who enjoy driving and working with the public to join our team as a part-time Bus Operator in Monroe County.
Promotion to full time is seniority-based for part time employees.
NEW HOURLY RATE! $21.16 per hour. Part Time; limited Full Time spots available. This is a Union environment in association with the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 282. The pay rate is on a 48-month progression scale. After completion of four successful years with RTS Access, your pay rate will be greater than $27.50/hr.!
TRAINING START DATE: January 6, 2025, for non-fully licensed candidates; January 13, 2025, for fully licensed candidates
*Please note: This position is NOT the Small Vehicle Operator (On Demand Driver) position or the RTS big bus Operator position. This position is located at RTS Access on Trabold Rd.
Here is an example of the type of bus you will drive as an Access Bus Operator (please note: upon completion of training and road test, you will possess a Class "C" license with passenger endorsement.)
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Must be available Weekdays, Weekends (both Saturday & Sunday), and Holidays between the hours of 5:00am and 1:00am.
- Must be available to work at least 20 hours per week (all work is picked by seniority; therefore, specific days/hours cannot be guaranteed).
- Must attend 4-5 weeks of paid training (Typical hours during training are Monday-Friday 8:00am – 4:00pm).
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Valid NY State Driver's License required. CDL (A, B, or C) with passenger endorsement highly preferred but not required.
- No more than 5 points on license.
- A minimum of five (5) years Class D auto driving experience.
- Excellent Customer Service skills are a must.
- Must be able to work flexible hours and varied days including weekends and holidays (all work is picked by seniority; therefore, specific days/hours cannot be guaranteed).

NO CDL? WE WILL TRAIN YOU!
You will be required to obtain your CDL permit with passenger endorsement prior to start date. We will provide you the paperwork to help you navigate the DMV permit requirement. Upon completion of training and road test, you will possess a Class "C" license with passenger endorsement.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, climbing (stairs), twisting (arm/back) and/or rotating (arm). May also involve lifting (up to 10 pounds), carrying (up to 10 pounds), pushing and/or pulling (up to 150 pounds) materials and/or equipment. Job involves sitting for extended periods of time; up to eight hours per day.
Ninety-five percent of time is spent inside and 5% of time is spent outside exposing employee to natural environmental conditions. Employee is exposed to fumes, noise (bus), vibration (seat), hazards, and motorized vehicles.

Pursuant to Federal Transit Administration regulations, all applicants for employment in safety-sensitive positions must be given a pre-employment drug test. RTS is required by law to test for various substances, including cocaine, amphetamines, opioids, PCP and marijuana metabolites. Please be advised that marijuana stays in the system for an extended period of time, sometimes more than 30 days, and can cause a positive test result long after use.
