JOB SUMMARY:

At Regional Transit Service (RTS), we prioritize the well-being of our employees and are committed to supporting their health and wellness needs. As the Nurse Case Manager, you will play a pivotal role in providing comprehensive support and guidance to employees across the organization regarding disability, health, and safety matters. You will collaborate with Occupational Health, Workers' Compensation, Benefits, Safety, and Well-being teams to support employee health, well-being, and safety.

 

COMPENSATION: $78,000-$90,000 annually (depending on experience)

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Occupational Health & Leave:

  • Drug & Alcohol Testing: Perform DOT and Non-DOT drug and alcohol testing in compliance with regulations.
  • Return-to-Work Evaluations: Conduct telephonic evaluations of employees returning from medical leave to determine if a return-to-work physical examination is needed based on 19A or safety-sensitive job requirements, in collaboration with contracted medical providers.
  • Scheduling & Coordination: Schedule and coordinate medical appointments, return-to-work physicals, and drug screenings while ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
  • Job Modifications: Collaborate with physicians, employers, and case examiners to recommend job duty modifications that facilitate early and safe return to work.

Workers' Compensation:

  • Progress Monitoring: Consult with the WC Administrators to track and monitor employees' recovery progress and return-to-work timelines, working with supervisors and case examiners to ensure a smooth transition back to duties, including any necessary work restrictions or accommodations.
  • Medical Appointment: Attend medical appointments on occasion to act as an advocate for the employee as requested.

Benefits & Well-being:

  • Ergonomic Improvements: Identify opportunities for ergonomic improvements that enhance employee comfort, safety, and job performance, and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Benefit Enhancements: Collaborate with benefits team, wellness team and broker to provide guidance on additional offerings that would provide ROI for employees and the organization

General:

  • Case Management: Utilize knowledge of case management practices to educate employees, case examiners, and legal representatives. Provide recommendations on matters such as FMLA, ADA, Workers' Compensation, and NYS Disability, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Analytics & Metrics: Participate in safety, well-being, and absenteeism team meetings. Contribute to the development of metrics, goals, and process improvements with a strategic focus on absenteeism associated with medical conditions.
  • Medical Coordination: Ensure timely access to medical care, adherence to treatment plans, and promote wellness initiatives in collaboration with internal benefits programs and medical providers.
  • Collaboration with Stakeholders: Establish and maintain positive relationships with organizational leaders, health specialists, and external medical contractors to support injury prevention, safety, and wellness efforts.
  • Employee Advocacy: Serve as an advocate for employees navigating disability, workers' compensation, and other health-related matters. Provide exceptional customer service through effective verbal and written communication to facilitate positive rehabilitation and return-to-work outcomes.
  • Record Keeping & Reporting: Maintain accurate records and reports related to employee work status. Conduct trend analysis to identify areas for improvement and opportunities for cost reduction.
  • Legal & Safety Collaboration: Work with the Legal department on complex or unusual cases, providing guidance and recommendations to mitigate future risks and enhance safety protocols.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing.
  • Registered Professional Nurse License in NY.
  • At least 5 years of clinical nursing experience.
  • At least 2 years of case management experience.
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • In-depth understanding of Worker's Compensation, NY State Disability, FMLA, OSHA, DOT, and ADA regulations.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the role.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Ability to follow routine procedures and make decisions using standard practices and judgment.
  • Ability to work independently with broad guidelines and objectives, seeking supervision for unusual situations.
  • Familiarity with return-to-work evaluations, physical examination requirements, and the ability to assess safety-sensitive job roles.
  • Strong understanding of workers' compensation laws, case management, and injury recovery protocols.
  • Strong knowledge of ADA protections and their coordination with leave policies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of state laws and regulations related to health, welfare, and leave administration.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Teams, Word, Excel, UKG, Zoom, and website navigation.
  • Capable of analyzing trends, developing metrics, and contributing to process improvements related to employee absenteeism and wellness.
  •  Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to advocate for employees and provide clear, concise guidance on health-related matters.
