Sondel Family Veterinary Clinic (SFVC) is searching for a hardworking, trustworthy, & reliable veterinary assistant with a positive attitude to join our fun-loving team of passionate veterinary professionals at a growing practice on Madison's West Side. Our clinic is built on a foundation of core values that guide everything we do - how we treat pets, clients, our Team Members, and our communities matter. We consistently approach our work with both passion and compassion by using our core set of values to guide us every day.  The veterinary assistants are a crucial part of ensuring the successful everyday functionality of the clinic. Responsibilities of the assistants include but are not limited to client communication, animal restraint, hospital cleanliness and organization, surgical preparation and clean-up, laboratory procedures, customer service, and general patient care.

The ideal candidate for this position is an individual whom has both customer service and animal handling experience, has the ability to work independently and problem solve effectively while also following directions accurately without being afraid to ask questions. Successful veterinary assistants at SFVC are logical thinkers, efficient workers, and honest with each other, management, and clients alike. Veterinary experience is not required and SFVC is willing to train the right person.

We're looking for an experienced Veterinary Assistant that is passionate about helping clients as they are about helping their furry friends. This position is full-time but will consider part-time for the perfect candidate. We offer a schedule with some flexibility and the opportunity to become a leader in our clinic. Our ideal candidate will be a self-starter, great multi-tasker, team player, and has attention to detail.

Job Type: Full-time but will consider part-time

Skills Required (preferred but will train the right individual): 

  • Knowledge of veterinary hospital practices and procedures
  • Ability to gather medical histories and vitals
  • Knowledge of in-house labs
  • Experience in restraining canine and feline patients
  • Experience with phlebotomy, catheter placement and maintenance
  • Preparation and execution of imagery for radiology studies
  • Strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy
  • Flexible prioritization
  • Effective decision making
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and terminology
  • Interact with a variety of clients and employees in a professional, caring, compassionate, and tactful manner
  • Knowledge of the generic and brand names, common uses, and side effects of drugs utilized in a veterinary practice
  • Basic proficiency with a variety of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Practice Management software (PIMS)

Essential Job Functions:

  • Assist veterinarians with appointments
  • Educate clients about wellness and prevention, nutrition, and individual pet health needs
  • Provide high-quality service to all clients while maintaining maximum productivity
  • Initiate laboratory, radiology, and treatment procedures
  • Prepare and monitor patients before, during, and after anesthetic procedures
  • Administer medications under the direction of a veterinarian
  • Anticipate veterinarian and team member needs
  • Foster a positive working culture built on our values
  • Support a practice environment that promotes collaboration and teamwork and ensures the delivery of quality, compassionate, effective, and efficient health care to pets
  • Comply with all practice policies, quality assurance guidelines, and minimum standards of care

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent computer use for long periods of time
  • Walking/standing for long periods of time, bending, reaching, grasping, and repetitive motions
  • Must be able to lift up to 30lbs. unassisted, 75lbs. with assistance
