Legal Assistant

POSITION SUMMARY: The Legal Assistant performs general secretarial work as well as specific tasks for the Legal Department under the guidance of the City Prosecutor. Employee is responsible for answering, screening, and returning telephone calls and emails from opposing counsel, defendants, insurance companies, other City employees, and the general public; preparing and updating various documents and files; retrieving and distributing mail; and performing routine tasks such as data entry, maintaining court calendars, preparing photocopies, and taking notes. Employee may be required to attend Court and assist the City Prosecutor in Court, as needed. Employee may be required to travel to attend special Court sessions, outside meetings, or training. This position works under the direct supervision of the Prosecutor.

WORK HOURS:        Monday through Friday, 8am to 4:30pm; Occasional After Hours Needed

WORK LOCATION:   City of Branson, Missouri; City Hall.  This is an in office position requiring work to be performed onsite.  

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:  The starting hourly wage is $22.35 per hour and will increase to $23.24 per hour after 6 months of successful probation

MINIMUM REQUIRED AND PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND TRAINING
A High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
A Bachelor's Degree in law, criminal justice, legal studies, business or other related degree is required. 
      o Directly related full-time work experience, as determined by the Department Director, of six (6) or more years of full-time employment may be consider in lieu of the degree requirement.  
Two (2) years of experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or legal secretary is required. 
 
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING
Completion of a certified legal assistant or paralegal program is preferred.
 
MISCELLANEOUS REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must be highly engaged in the department's goals, and be able to work cooperatively with the City of Branson leadership in achieving those goals.
Must possess a high degree of integrity, strong work ethic and ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
Must demonstrate excellent customer service to the department's internal or external customers. 
Must be proficient in Microsoft products to include Word, Excel, and Outlook. 
Must possess a valid driver's license and be insurable under the City of Branson's motor vehicle coverage when operating a vehicle as a part of the position. 
Must act safely and follow safety standards while at work. 
Must possess no felony convictions at any time while employed by the City of Branson. 
Must be able to pass a background investigation and drug and alcohol screenings.
