Description:

The primary responsibility of the Outside Plant Fiber Splicer will be to prep and splice fiber optic cables in indoor/outdoor settings. Read, create, and maintain splicing schematics and diagrams, and maintain control of OSP activities surrounding the assigned project. The candidate will take and maintain accurate splicing and field notes and support project timelines, in addition to performing end to end OTDR tests, reviewing test results for acceptable loss readings, and providing close out packages complete with pictures, formal loss results, and redlined schematic documentation. Other duties and responsibilities may be required and/or assigned. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Prep and fusion splice various types and sizes of fiber optic cables including loose tube and ribbon cable. 

  • Prep and install both aerial and underground splice enclosures along with a variety of other closures common to the splicing and termination of fiber optic cables. 

  • Perform bi-directional OTDR testing, along with power meter testing. 

  • Installation and dressing of fiber optic cables. 

  • Ability to read prints and comprehend splice instructions. 

  • Attention to detail and accuracy. 

  • Requires significant time doing manual labour tasks and sometimes working in tight spaces. 

  • Ability to climb and work at elevations (e. g. from ladders, Aerial lift trucks). 

  • Working knowledge of hand and power tools. 

  • Ability to perform physical activities including, but not limited to: lifting objects weighing over 50 pounds. 

  • Ability to perform job activities outdoors in different weather conditions (e. g. cold and/or heat, inclement weather). 

  • Wear appropriate safety apparel and follow all established safety practices and procedures. 

  • Be adaptable to industrial work site settings for daily safety requirements. 

  • Ability to work respectfully with others and to work independently. 

Additional Requirements: 

  • Must be able to travel for extended periods of time and work flexible hours with the understanding that workdays can be in excess of normal hours and some weekend work may be required. 

  • Must be comfortable working rotational shifts and staying in onsite camp accommodations. 

  • Must be able to pass Fit for duty, Drug and Alcohol testing.

Experience Required: 

  • 2+ years Fibre Optic splicing and testing experience. 

  • Technical training considered an asset. 

  • Previous telecommunications experience and testing for improved experience.
