Position Title: Certified Medical Assistant

Full Time Position – Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

40 hours per week during hours of operation, Hours of operation subject to change

Job Summary: The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) is part of the care team in the ambulatory patient care setting and directly interacts with the patient, family, and caregiver in person, over the telephone and via the patient portal. The CMA advocates for the patient in the delivery of quality, cost effective patient care by performing the clinical tasks and duties assigned by the physician, nurse practitioner, registered nurse, licensed practical nurse, and practice leadership to improve individual and population health.

Summary of Accountabilities:

  • Demonstrates the mission, vision, and values of Osborn Family Health Center in behaviors, practices, and decisions.
  • The Certified Medical Assistant will provide care to patients in the assigned clinical area by the Director of Nursing and/or Nurse Manager and/or Licensed Practical Nurse.
  • The Certified Medical Assistant will work in the assigned clinical areas: Pediatrics, Family Practice and/or OB/GYN Department.
  • Training will be provided by the Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse and/or Lead Certified Medical Assistant in each clinical area as well as the Vaccine Training Coordinator.
  • Serves as a patient advocate in direct interactions with the patient and care team.
  • Prepares exam rooms after each patient and at end of day. Assure cleanliness, neatness, and maintain par level of supplies.
  • Greets and courteously escorts patients and other guests to the exam room.
  • Accurately documents appropriate medical information. This includes but is not limited to vital signs, such as pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, and weight and height, obtaining information regarding the reason for the patient visit and presenting problem/s, medical and social history.  Perform age-appropriate wellness exams. This includes hearing exams and eye exams.
  • Understands and can verbalize the criteria for each insurance payer program and will assist with performance improvement opportunities by identifying and closing gaps in care, as well as ensures appropriate documentation.
  • Understands the process as it relates to discharges from area hospitals and the importance of timely follow up of the patient.
  • Assists provider with care of patients when needed including serving as a chaperone.
  • Abstracts and prepares medical records in advance of patient appointment to assure the past medical history is up to date, all previous orders are followed, completed tests and referrals is available, and any emergency room, urgent care or inpatient discharge information has been obtained.
  • Participates in care team huddles.
  • When directed, facilitates the communication with the referral or prior authorization team navigator for diagnostics and testing.  Communicated the outcome in the timely matter to the provider and patient.
  • Administers intramuscular and subcutaneous vaccines, administers PPD's, performs in-office testing, and facilitates medication refill management as directed by provider (in accordance with State's CMA scope of practice).
  • Assist patients with the completion of questionnaires as needed.
  • Promptly and accurately communicates patient questions, issues or concerns with providers received via telephone, patient portal, or in-person.
  • Performs duties such as answering telephones, scheduling patients, scanning, check in, and check out and/or assigned tasks.
  • Assures all patients’ demographic information is up to date.
  • Always maintain strict HIPAA compliance according to Osborn Family Health Center policy.
  • Responds to families, visitors, and staff in a sensitive manner.
  • Cultivates positive relationships with all patients, customers, guests, and members of the care team.
  • Provides care with consideration for the cultural needs of the patient and/or family.
  • Exhibits of age specific competency with all age groups.
  • Demonstrates the ability and competency to respond quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
  • Assists with any additional duties as needed or as directed by the Provider, RN, LPN, or Leadership staff.
  • Coverage of other services as needed.

Minimum Certifications, Registry and/or Licenses Required: Certified Medical Assistant.

Per NJBOME - Must be a graduate of a 330-hour Medical Assistant program that is accredited by the Department of Education.

Must be certified by one of the following certifying bodies: NHA, AMT, NCCT, AAMA, AMCA, NCMA, or NAHP

Minimum Degree and Experience Required:

High school diploma or GED equivalent required

One to two years of experience preferred as a Certified Medical Assistant

Basic Life Skills (BLS) Certified

Bilingual in Spanish preferred
