Lead Barista

Job Summary:

The Lead Barista has direct oversight of day to day Coffee Cart operations. It is the responsibility of the Lead Barista positon to ensure the Coffee Cart is staying consistent with its schedule and provides great customer service. The Lead Barista is responsible for providing excellent guest service, drink samples and utilizing up-sell and cross-sell methods to increase sales of drinks and snack items.

Essential Functions:

  • Assists with the oversight of day-to-day operations of the Coffee Cart.
  • Tracks and maintains inventory to ensure Coffee Cart is stocked for the week and responsible for ordering supplies.
  • Tracks, schedules and organizes the day-to-day cleaning of the Coffee Cart.
  • Reports daily Coffee Cart earnings.
  • Communicate daily drink specials, food offerings, and coffee cart schedule to campus employees via email, social media, and community via signage.
  • Assists with timesheets for Team members.
  • Provides quality beverages consistently for all guests.
  • Welcomes and connects with every guest.  Develops rapport with guests by learning their names, favorite drinks, and food items. 
  • Sells and serves espresso drinks, smoothies, and miscellaneous food items to guests utilizing up-sell and cross-sell methods in increase sales. 
  • Accurately processes transactions through the Point of Sale system (POS) and counts change back correctly to the customer.
  • Keeps equipment operational by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintain supplies; performing preventative maintenance; calling appropriate party (ies) for repair.
  • Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading coffee, retail trade, and food service publications; and maintain personal networks.
  • Responds to guests needs and says "thank you" to every guest.
  • Maintains a clean and organized workspace. 
  • Adheres to all company recipes and measurements. 
  • Knowledge of all drinks on menu and being able to verbally explain offerings to customers.
  • May assist with supervisory responsibilities when needed.
  • Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent,
  • Requires a minimum of one (1) year barista experience to include customer service and cash-handling experience.
  • OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Driving Requirements:

  • This position may require driving.

Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:

  • State of Oregon Food Handler's Certificate or ability to obtain one within 30 days of hire
  • Must be at least 18 years of age. 
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to self-direct when necessary.
  • Excellent leadership capabilities; ability to work well within groups.
  • Must be detail-oriented with ability to multi-task.
  • Basic or previous POS knowledge a plus.
  • Proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Ability to keep calm, mature, and professional demeanor when needed.
  • Adaptability and the ability to creatively troubleshoot difficult situations.
  • Creativity and ability to create new drink offerings.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture required.

Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

  • Continually requires the ability to express or receive detailed information or important instructions through oral communication.
  • Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers.  Often requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.
  • Requires standing and/or sitting for sustained periods of time, raising objects from a lower to a higher position and/or moving objects horizontally.
  • Occasionally requires lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
  • This position is frequently subject to inside environmental conditions which provide protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from temperature changes, and is routinely subject to outside environmental conditions.
  • May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
  • Local travel is frequently required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
