Lab Assistant

Summary:  The Laboratory Assistant will coordinate and perform tasks and activities in several areas of the clinical laboratory. Each day a  Laboratory Assistant will be assigned specific areas of responsibility within the scope of the job as outlined herein.  Depending upon the area of responsibility the Laboratory Assistant will monitor the status of the workflow of the tasks involved and shall prioritize each task.

 


Education:    High School Diploma or equivalent required.  Associate degree or higher preferred.                    

Experience:  Two years phlebotomy experience required.  Lab experience preferred.  Prior experience using computer software, preferably electronic medical records. Prior customer service experience preferred

Certification and Licensure:  Certified Phlebotomist, Registered MA, Certified MA, current LPN, or graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assisting.  Must have or be able to obtain CPR certification within 6 months.           


Essential Job Functions:

  • Effectively navigate the Harvest system, including searching for patients and printing lab results for physicians.
  • Perform labs that have been ordered by physicians for patients that come in for lab only visits.
  • Collects laboratory specimens according to procedure manual as ordered by the physician. Order labels in the Harvest system and label specimen appropriately.
  • Process specimens, complete appropriate lab forms, and bag up specimens for the reference lab.
  • Perform Occult Blood testing and complete log book entries.
  • Properly perform and result CBC labs on the Medonic Analyzer.
  • Assist lab director with Medonic maintenance including controls and scheduled cleanings and printing of daily and monthly quality controls and graphs.
  • Manage Quality control and Quality control logbooks for test kits.
  • Answer incoming laboratory phone calls.
  • Order lab supplies as assigned by Laboratory Director.
  • Knows and observes policies set OHSA and CLIA.
  • Knows criteria for specimen acceptance, logs specimens in, keeps accurate records, prepares and transmits reports clearly and completely.
  • Adheres to infection control guidelines.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Promotes positive public relations to patients, visitors, families, physicians, and others. Exhibits characteristics consistent with CPC values for quality, respect, teamwork, and pride.
  • Physical appearance and conduct is consistent with acceptable professional ethics and CPC standards.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by his/her supervisor.

Equipment Operated: Standard office equipment including computers, printers, copiers, telephones, calculators, fax machines etc. 

Work Environment: Position is primarily in a well-lighted office environment

Mental/Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent standing, walking, grasping, carrying, and speaking
  • Occasional sitting, reaching, bending, and stooping
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 50 pounds, with assistance if needed
  • Frequent use of computer, keyboard, copy and fax machine, and phone
