Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience OR BA/BS Degree in Agriculture, natural resources, agronomy or related field of study

  • Background with silviculture and genetics.
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, ARCVIEW (GIS)
Duties:

Serve as the USFS Genetic Resources Management Advisor. Advise U.S. Forest Service personnel on all relevant aspects of the tree seed orchard and cone collection programs. These activities may include tree assessments including: inventories, tagging, flower stimulation, cone forecasts, insect control, and health assessments. Additional duties may include seed orchard site evaluation for protection, maintenance, repairs, and cone collection.

  • Tree Seed Orchard Management - provide guidance in building seed orchard management plans & assist with other associated work in the management plan as listed above.   80%
  • Cone Collection - provide guidance in building a cone collection plan/contract and assist with contract planning including field recon and layout. Assistance with force account collection of priority species.   20%

Other:
  • Travel Requirements: Occasional travel to specific project sites in R6.
  • Overnight travel: Occasional overnight travel (est. 1-2 nights/month) may be required to accomplish work in remote work sites in R6.
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Prior to beginning any field work, Program Manager and Enrollee will review and discuss the WNF General Field Work Risk Assessment and any documents referenced within. Tailgate safety sessions will be completed prior to each instance of field work to ensure hazards are understood and the required mitigation is in place. Other safety training is not required for this type of work.
  • Required Safety Gear: All necessary personal protective equipment required for general forest activities plus PPE for UTV operation and tree climbing including but not limited to hardhat, gloves, ear protection, harness, boots, etc.
  • Safety Gear Use: Walking in forest (over head and tripping hazards), climbing trees.
  • Physical requirements: Work takes place in both office and field settings. Office work may require long periods of sitting or standing, and the use of computers. Field work often involves strenuous exertion, lifting, using equipment (e.g., hand tools), hiking long distances, traversing rough terrain, and tree climbing.
