The Agricultural Conservation Experienced Services (ACES) Program offers unique opportunities in Scientific, Technical, and Agricultural support for individuals aged 55 and over to support the Department of Agriculture?s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) through a grant administered program awarded to National Experienced Workforce Solutions (NEW Solutions). This is a unique program where your talents, expertise, and experience will truly be valued. The ACES program provides an opportunity to work side-by-side with NRCS staff that are doing important work every day. Qualifications:

Minimum of 20 year(s) of experience in soil and water conservation work to include engineering practice planning, design, and construction. OR BA/BS Degree in Agricultural, Civil, Environmental, or other related engineering area of study.

  • Valid State Driver?s license
  • Experience required with Windows, MS Word, MS Excel
  • Abode Acrobat, AutoCAD Civil 3D, ArcGIS, NRCS Software.
Duties:

Provide engineering with professional support, to field office personnel, area office personnel, and/or similar engineers for all engineering phases (e.g., planning, survey, design, layout, construction, inspection, and certification) of soil and water conservation practices.

  • Directs and prepares designs, preliminary and final drawings and specifications on complex engineering practices. Performs designs to include engineering design analysis(s) including hydrological, hydraulic, structural, and geotechnical analysis. Also performs designs accounting for ease of construction, availability of materials, and adapted to the specific site conditions.   40%
  • Coordinates and supervises the planning, design and construction of engineering practices. Makes periodic on-site inspections of the engineering work for technical adequacy and adherence to standards and policy to assure work is being carried out according to drawings and specifications, and to identify major problems not covered by precedents or established policies.   20%
  • Reviews and checks engineering planning, design, and construction work of NRCS staff. Recommends changes in designs, specifications, and schedules to accommodate conditions at construction site, availability of materials or to expedite construction.   20%
  • Directs the type, scope, and intensity of field investigations and surveys needed for the practice implementation. Directs the collections and processing of field data and ensures adequacy of the collected data. Ensures that procedures and products conform to current service policy and standards. Requests assistance of specialists for more complex work (i.e. unstable foundation).   15%
  • Assists the Leadership in determining the training needs of the field personnel engaged in engineering work. Makes recommendations to Leadership on training needed and assists in the organization of the statewide engineering training program. Provides technical guidance and training to personnel in the area of all engineering practices.   5%

  • Annual information system security, anti-harassment, and civil rights training.
  • Travel Requirements: GOV, if available at local NRCS office, or POV vehicle required to drive to/from conservation project sites, and to/from lodging.
  • Overnight travel: Occassional travel to conservation project sites with an frequency of 2-5 nights/ month
  • Health and Safety Considerations: Working in outdoor conditions is to be expected at conservation project sites. Outdoor walking over uneven or steep terrain in all weather conditions is to be expected at conservation project sites. General outdoor safety trainings will be provided by NRCS, if applicable.
  • Required Safety Gear: Boots or durable footwear, hard hat, safety glass, rain appropriate clothing, and warm clothing, may be needed at conservation project sites.
  • Remote work arrangements are available for this position.
