Master Diesel Technician

 

Summary

The Master Tractor Technician is responsible for the inspection, diagnoses, service, repair and preventative maintenance of the various types of ATS tractors by using OEM, ATS and industry standard methods and criteria to make sure the tractor is safe to be on the road.

 

Education and Experience

  1. Two year AAS Degree in medium/heavy truck diesel program and/ or seven years of equivalent experience in related field e.g., automotive, medium/heavy equipment, trailer repair, etc. and must have experience in diagnosing complex and/or difficult to diagnoses electronic engine and after-treatment system fault codes and symptom based driver complaints.
  2. OEM dealership training qualifications and engine certifications required to support ATS in filing warranty claims under OEM fleet direct dealership agreements.
  3. Strong working knowledge with the ability to interpret various OEM's diagnostic and repair procedures utilizing various types of diagnostic tools and equipment to successfully complete repairs with minimal to no workmanship comebacks.  
  4. Highly experienced in using OEM software and additional software such as: Cummins Insite, Detroit Diesel Link, Volvo Premium Tech Tool, PACCAR E-Portal, Meritor, Wabco, Bendix, Thermo King-APU, etc. to diagnose and make repairs.
  5. Working Knowledge of DOT regulations and Out of Service parameters for tractors, trailers and accessorial equipment.
  6. A valid commercial driver's license.
  7. Brake and 609 air conditioning certifications required.
  8. Must have ASE master certification or ability to obtain after one year of employment.
  9. Must be able to operate all related shop equipment. 
  10. Must be DOT certified and forklift certified or able to obtain a forklift license within 3 months. 
  11. Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook) required.
  12. Excellent communication skills (written, listening and verbal).
  13. Strong decision-making, problem-solving, attention to detail and customer service skills (internal/external).
  14. Excellent diagnostic skills.            
  15. Willing and able to travel infrequently, including overnight travel.
  16. Must furnish basic tools and ATS will provide specialty tools to perform functions of the job.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform routine to complex level inspections, maintenance and repair on diesel tractors using ATS and OEM guidelines to ensure that the tractors are operating correctly to minimize unplanned failures.
  2. Perform all necessary/scheduled preventative maintenance services e.g., oil and grease, air filters, etc.
  3. Complete DOT inspections on outgoing trucks to verify that all necessary repairs have been made.
  4. Record all parts and repair work into computer system to track cost of repairs.
  5. Maintain a clean and professional work environment including tools, equipment, shop and service truck to high appearance standards. 
  6. Ensure safety procedures are implemented and followed and PPE is used at all times.
  7. Inspect and repair engines, drivetrain, hydraulic, fuel, air, electrical, HVAC, brakes and suspension.
  8. Install and work with all types of onboard electronic equipment. ELD's, cameras. Etc.
  9. Perform new vehicle inspection and final assembly including factory warranty repairs and computer diagnostics and programing
  10. Participate in online OEM training.
  11. Attend factory sponsored training classes as required to maintain certifications required for warranty
  12. Perform work as outlined on repair orders efficiently and accurately in accordance with dealership, factory, and customer standards.
  13. Repair, overhaul, and perform routine maintenance on diesel tractors according ATS and OEM specifications.
  14. Drive vehicles as needed for test drives
  15. Train and be a resource to others (technicians, drivers, managers, etc.).
  16. Meet Master level standard time rating  (100%+)
  17. Meet Master level rework frequency (0 per year)
  18. Meet Master level Quality Assurance Performance (100%)
  19. Meet all ATS and department objectives and deadlines.
  20. Follow all ATS and department policies and procedures.
  21. Works within budget that is set for the department.

Constantly positioning self under, on top of, or in awkward positions to work on equipment.

Frequently moving about to obtain tools, supplies, parts and to inspect equipment.

Constantly uses hand tools and power hand tools to repair equipment, manipulate parts into position or enter data into computer.

Constantly inspecting and assessing equipment to determine whether to replace or repair and the best approach to replace/repair.

Intermittently communicates with others regarding work questions, processes, procedures and timelines.

Must be able to move/position parts, tools equipment:

  • From 1 to 10 lbs. Frequently
  • From 11 to 25 lbs. frequently
  • From 25 to 50 lbs. occasionally
  • Over 50 lbs. occasionally

Exposure to:

  • Loud noises constantly requiring hearing protection.
  • Temperature extremes intermittently due to outside weather conditions.
  • Dirt, dust, grease, chemicals and odors constantly.
  • Situations requiring eye protection and steel toed boots and when welding, an approved shield.
